Genetic Variation – An Introduction
By Prof. Dr. Manfred W. Mueller and Prof. Dr. Christian Schneeberger
The natural variation of the human genome is responsible for the individuality of every human being – with a sole exception: identical (monozygotic) twins. In humans, up to 99.9% of the genome is identical throughout the species; the remaining fraction of 0.% is responsible for the inherited variety within mankind. This small portion contributes to our individuality and can account for individual reactions to the same environmental influences. The insight into genetic individuality and with it insight into the genetic predisposition of a patient is of prime importance for the modern Anti-Aging Medicine, allowing the attending physician to take individual preventive measures and, if necessary, to apply a patient-tailored therapy and medication.
